I know that when production companies scout for locations abroad, they often fall in love with iconic settings long before they even set foot in the country.

But there’s another truth: that perfect shot is rarely just about what looks good on a mood board.

I’ll tell you when a spot that looks perfect on Instagram is a logistical disaster. Or when a less glamorous street corner is actually ideal for your scene and won’t grind your schedule to a halt.

On the ground, it’s about logistics, access, timing, and cost. And for small productions, social media shoots, or fashion photoshoots on a budget… I’d say the maxim should be: let your local fixer, that’s me, be your production’s best friend.

Mood boards that can be ‘expensive’

Some of Malta’s most beautiful spaces, like historic palaces or manicured public gardens, do allow filming, but not without conditions. Closed sets will definitely involve hefty permit fees, limited time slots, and strict regulations from local authorities. What might look simple on paper can turn into a slow-moving operation on shoot day.

For example, take Malta’s public gardens. While they seem ideal for a peaceful scene or romantic walk-and-talk, many are protected spaces that charge fees or require advance notice for commercial shoots.

Trust is a two-way street

Of course, no fixer expects to override your creative vision.

But when time, budget, or permits threaten the schedule, the best move a production company can make is to trust their local’s knowledge.
